EEaster: This hymn by John Newton places the focus of both singer and listener on the depth of Jesus sacrifice on the cross, through her reverence and lyrical depth. These lyrics were written as if you were standing next to the cross and in that space, there’s despair as Jesus looks at the singer and pierces his soul. It makes way for felt remorse, knowing we, our guilt, was in fact that which nailed our Lord to that wooden cross. But there’s also the dawning of hope in the lyrics and music when Jesus looks at the singer a second time: ‘I freely all forgive…I die that you may live’.
